I saw the birds breathing this morning
little puffs of steam emitted
as they stood on the railing, tapping busily
on sunflower seeds.

I dug a hole and buried the dead
chickadee in it

later the ground steamed gently in the sun
and I imagined chickadee spirit rising into the sky
canny and quick and very very neat
